Since its creation in 2005 on the initiative of Angelo Randazzo, President of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia, the Palermo-Montecarlo has quickly established itself as a major classic in the Mediterranean. Since 2016, it has been included in the calendar of the International Maxi Association (IMA), alongside the Rolex Middle Sea Race, the Volcano Race and the Rolex Giraglia.
For the most seasoned sailors, like Mauro Pelaschier, Jochen Schümann, Francesco Bruni, Philippe Monnet and Brad Butterworth, four-time winner of the America’s Cup, it’s a race against the clock to conquer a record; for others, it’s a real adventure lasting several days and nights at sea to be enjoyed with the family.
The Palermo-Montecarlo regatta attracts keen sailors from all over the world every year. Participants range from amateurs to seasoned professionals, representing a diversity of nationalities and levels of experience. The competition is an opportunity for crews to showcase their sailing skills and team spirit.
The boats taking part in the Palermo-Montecarlo are distinguished by their design and performance. Measured according to the IRC system, they range from monohulls to multihulls, each optimised to make the most of the sailing conditions. These yachts are often equipped with advanced technology, enabling them to navigate Mediterranean waters quickly and efficiently. The participants invest time and resources in preparing their boats to meet the challenges presented by this regatta.
