The 70th Regata dei Tre Golfi served up a scenario worthy of the finest moments in the history of Mediterranean sailing, with wind, strategy and a knife-edged battle down to the wire after 150 nautical miles of racing between the islands of Ponza and Li Galli and finishing in Naples. Far from the sometimes slow regattas in the heat of summer, this opening event of the IMA Maxi European Championship got off at a cracking pace. The race started on Friday 16 May at 4.15pm from Santa Lucia Bay in a 14-18 knot northeasterly, gusting over 20 knots. It was one of the fastest and most exciting in recent years.

It was in these demanding conditions that Yacht Club de Monaco members shone on all fronts. David Leuschen aboard Galateia literally flew round the course to take line honours in 13 hours 19 minutes 42 seconds, setting a new record to boot. He also won the Maxi I category.
Another remarkable performance was that of Peter Harrison, 2nd in Maxi 4 with Jolt, and 3rd overall in IRC. His 4th place in real time highlighted the crew’s consistency and speed in this ultra-competitive fleet. Pier Luigi Loro Piana aboard My Song completed the podium in Maxi 1 in 3rd behind Galateia, and achieved 9th place in real time. In IRC, he was 10th.
In the multihull category, Lord Laidlaw on Highland Fling XVIII held his own against a strong fleet to take 3rd in real time and also 3rd in the IMA Tre Golfi Multihull Trophy – a great start for the catamaran with its impressive pedigree.
Finally, Vincenzo Onorato at the helm of Mascalzone Latino competed in a number of races from the offshore event and inshore races at Sorrento as part of the ORC Mediterranean Championship. He finished 16th in ORC overall out of 59, 7th in Class B for the Regata dei Tre Golfi, 4th overall and 2nd in Class B in the ORC Mediterranean Championship at Sorrento.

Great start to the season

Results from this first major competition of the season highlights YCM members’ ability to perform on all types of sailboats. It bodes well for the next stages of the Maxi European Championship that continues this week in Sorrento.
