The 21st Coppa Europa Smeralda 888 concluded on Sunday in typical Sardinian conditions, light airs on the first day then flat calm on the Saturday before a Mistral kicked in and shook up the fleet in the final races.
In what is now a well-established event on the calendar since 2001, Yacht Club de Monaco again more than held their own with several teams at the forefront of a compact competitive fleet.
On Vamos mi Amor, the Class President Charles de Bourbon des Deux Siciles clinched 2nd overall, after winning the last race which the crew managed to perfection in the strong 20-plus knot winds.
Just behind them , Stay Rude skippered by Guglielmo Lombardi Stronati completed the podium in 3rd, equal on points with the 2nd place finisher, proving just how intense the races had been.
Winner of the previous invitational week, Marco Favale on Millenium Falcon, finished 5th after winning the 3rd race.
Among others representing YCM, Giovanni Lombardi Stronati (Django) and Martin Nweeia (Paka A) came 8th and 9th respectively. The overall winner was Capocaccia skippered by Luigi Guarnaccia who held their collective nerve throughout the unstable conditions.
Three days of racing, four races and a podium finish confirm the momentum behind Monaco sailors on the Smeralda 888 circuit where consistency, tactics and well-managed manoeuvres in strong winds proved decisive.
