For the first time ever, The Ocean Race Europe stopped over in France with Leg 3 finishing in Nice. After 680 nautical miles from Cartagena and the Côte d’Azur city, the IMOCA Malizia–Seaexplorer of Boris Herrmann (Yacht Club de Monaco) crossed the line at 09:43 on Friday 29 August after 2 days 18 hours, 42 minutes and 53 seconds of racing. The crew clinched 5th place out of seven contestants and is now lying 4th in the provisional ranking.

A short but demanding leg

Unpredicted weather forced the Race Committee to modify the course on the eve of the finish, cancelling the rounding of the Giraglia Rock (off Corsica) to avoid gale-force winds and risk of flat calm in the bay of Nice. In the end, a steady westerly was holding at daybreak enabling the leaders to make a dash for the finish line. “It’s quite fun to sail with two or three competitors so close together, with constant gains and losses,” said Boris Herrmann from the boat.
The winner was Paul Meilhat and his crew on Biotherm after a thrilling duel with Holcim-PRB. With two legs remaining, Malizia–Seaexplorer of Team Maliza, founded by Yacht Club de Monaco vice-president Pierre Casiraghi, remains very much in contention for a podium finish. Leg 4 kicks off on Sunday 31 August from Nice to Genoa with a passage in front of Monaco.
