Two days and 11 races on a beautiful stretch of water facing Antibes’ ramparts delighted 52 teenagers, aged 12 to 17, all sharing the same passion for sailing. The 3rd IBSA Regatta, the only international competition for young people with a disability, again lived up to expectations ashore and at sea.
Aboard Hansa 303s, small two-hander keelboats designed never to capsize, the teams competed in a 15-20 knot wind on the Friday and lighter airs on the Saturday.  Whether experienced or beginners, everyone found their place in the fleet where all boats are identical, the only thing that matters being the bond between crewmates.
Yacht Club de Monaco was represented by Arthur Piekarek (15) from the Sports Section, and Evan Calabuig (15), a young autistic lad who recently got involved thanks to the Monaco Disease Power association. Together they pulled off a superb 3rd place behind two pairs from Thonon-les-Bains and Berck.
What struck most was the atmosphere of contagious energy both on the water and ashore. Between races, contestants were full of the friendships made, speed sensations, waves that buffeted them, and the simple joys of hoisting a sail and holding a course.

For Yacht Club de Monaco, the bronze medal showcases its growing commitment to its sailing section for people of all ages with disabilities. The next event sees Nicolas Lelu, a wheelchair helmsman, representing Monaco in India 8-13 October at the Asian Inclusive Sailing Series. The year ends with the 3rd Navicap Challenge-Elena Sivoldaeva Trophy 28-30 November organised by the YCM.
