Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series – Act I

10-12 November 2023

Tuesday 7th November 2023. Since 2013, the best J/70 teams have enjoyed taking advantage of the Mediterranean mild winters to come and race in the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, monthly regattas that have become a tradition for many, organised by Yacht Club de Monaco. This weekend a fleet will gather for the new season. Note that the J/70 Monaco Class Association has one of the largest fleets in the Mediterranean with some 20 teams sailing all year round under the Club’s flag.

The 11th Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series kicks off a packed season marked by the 40th anniversary of the Primo Cup-Trophée UBS (7-10 March 2024). Considered a flagship event for the one design elite it was created by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco who will also be celebrating 40 years as YCM’s President next year.

Who’s next?

After Ludovico Fassitelli on Junda was crowned champion of 2022/2023, there are plenty of contenders for the title this season, with some 20 teams on the starting blocks for the opener which looks very promising.

Autumnal conditions are expected to fuel battles on the water between the headliners represented by Monaco sailors led by Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio on G-Spot, Charisma V helmed by Louis Samuel Poons and Pierrik Devic’s Leonteq team, fresh from their participation in the J/70 World Championship held recently in Florida.

Although this meeting may be a formality for the favourites, all boats will be keen to start racking up points during three days of racing in variable conditions that will add to the suspense.

In good company

In the Smeralda 888 class, having just finished their season won by Class President Charles de Bourbon des Deux-Siciles on Vamos mi Amor for the eighth time, this fleet will be competing for the first time, an excellent opportunity to prepare for their 2024 season. Rendezvous Wednesday 10th November at noon for the first warning signal.
