Lake Garda hosted the first edition of the Swan Lake Garda Challenge, 23-26 July, the third stage in the Nations League organised by ClubSwan Racing. For the first time, the ClubSwan 28 one-design boats were sailing on an inland body of water that is famous for being unique and demanding.
Organised by Fraglia Vela Riva, this stage brought together eight boats from seven nations with some 40 sailors representing ten countries. Yacht Club de Monaco was represented by Lorenzo Bortolotti at the helm of Black Swan who came a solid 4th place in the overall ranking having finished in the top five of five races.
Despite the unpredictable conditions with thunderstorms coming through and changeable wind patterns, eight races were completed. The teams had to contend with variable winds from a northerly weakening to 13 knots, a southerly nipping in, then lighter 6-7 knot breezes peaking at 16 knots. Conditions sorely tested contestants tactics and ability to adapt.
The potential and appeal of the ClubSwan 28 is reflected in the ever-expanding fleet, five boats in Bonifacio, seven in Porto Cervo and eight in La Garda. The next meeting is in Scarlino in Tuscany 16-20 September for the Swan Tuscany Challenge, which also serves as this class’s European Championship.
