‘Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’: Port Hercule takes on an air of maritime adventure

Yacht Club de Monaco organised another edition of the annual Fête de la Mer, celebrating St Peter, Patron Saint of Fishermen. The theme this year was ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’ for a day that saw families, sea lovers, associations and visitors flock to the YCM Marina to enjoy a programme of nautical activities, entertainment and workshops in a festive family-friendly atmosphere. All the principle nautical and environmental institutions participated, including Les Pontons de Monaco; Société Nautique de Monaco (rowing club); Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation; Mairie de Monaco; Roca Jet Club; Oceanographic Museum; Oceanographic Institute of Monaco; Club d’Exploration Sous-Marine de Monaco (scuba diving); Monaco’s port authority (SEPM); the Monaco Government; the Monaco Protection for Nature association; the Institution François d’Assise-Nicolas Barré; PELAGOS; and the Rotary Club Monaco. “The Fête de la Mer retains its simple, intergenerational appeal that is behind its success. It’s about families coming together, discovering new activities, interacting with associations and enjoying the sea another way. It’s a day that reflects Monaco’s strong attachment to the marine environment and maritime cultures,” says Bernard d’Alessandri, Yacht Club de Monaco’s General Secretary and Director.
Monegasque yachting players out in force for the future

Over a hundred professionals attended the annual Spring Pop-Up organised at the Yacht Club de Monaco by the Cluster Yachting Monaco. The day saw brokers, owners and yachting companies involved in talks focused on market trends, and visiting the 22 yachts presented in the YCM Marina. “This type of gathering is particularly important for our industry today. These discussions give us a chance to step back and share points of view to better understand the changes taking place,” said Bernard d’Alessandri, President of the Cluster Yachting Monaco and General Secretary and Director of the YCM.

YCM’s juniors made progress at the Optimist qualifying regatta in Martigues. The Monegasque teams were competing this weekend at a Ligue Sud event and were represented by seven in the Minimes (older) category and four Benjamins (younger) in a fleet that numbered several French team members competing on international circuits. Despite the challenging conditions at times, the young sailors from Yacht Club de Monaco’s Sports Section improved with every race.

Matteo Di Maio remains in contention with the top five at the RS21 Yamamay Cup in Sferracavallo. Competing in the second stage of the RS21 Italian circuit, the Yacht Club de Monaco member finished 6th aboard Era L’Ora after six races against 19 competitors. Meanwhile, Anatoli Karatchinski and Path RS came 15th overall at this Sicilian race venue.

Loïc Pompée secured an intergenerational win at the Porquerolle’s Race. At the helm of Terrible Joy in IRC 2, the Yacht Club de Monaco member had a perfect week winning all five races in his category. Their total domination of the waters off the Porquerolles was down to a crew of experience and youth, including Louise Debeaumont and Louis Pompée aboard the Monegasque Cape 31.

Oren Nataf claimed victory in the Armen Race in the Multi 2000 category. Competing on Rayon Vert, the Yacht Club de Monaco member completed the 350 nautical mile course in particularly challenging conditions. At the end of 1 day 12 hours 6 minutes and 33 seconds at sea, battling winds over 40 knots, he secured victory in his category and achieved a remarkable 2nd place overall out of the 200 boats registered.
