Trophée Virginie Hériot

Midway through the Virginie Hériot Trophy, pressure is mounting in Monaco. After two days of racing, the 21 all-female teams competing are on the final straight with one goal: to win.

Organised by Yacht Club de Monaco under the aegis of the Monegasque and French Sailing Federations, with the support of FxPro, the event has brought sailors together from all over the world.

Royal Thames Yacht Club breaks away

An easterly wind set the stage for a tactically challenging day where every nuance counted. From the first warning signal, the groups comprising the fleet produced some knife-edged duels on a demanding course, with those behind determined not to be outdone. This evening the British from Royal Thames Yacht Club remain in pole position, having managed to widen the gap with each race.

It looks as if nothing can stop them, as the team from across the Channel set a relentless pace with impressive consistency. The proof is there in the results: five races, five wins.

Behind them, the Americans on Sound Sisters held their nerve, but a fourth place in the last race has scuppered any ambitions they had of winning. They remain in a provisional second place, equal on points with the Swiss team from the Lausanne Sailing Club.

On Sunday, the final battle starts 11:00 with a few races left to go before the prize-giving in the afternoon.
