Three months exactly until the start of the 19th Palermo-Montecarlo
Around 90 days left, exactly three months until the start of the nineteenth edition of the Palermo-Montecarlo, a late summer offshore regatta which in almost twenty years has carved out an international role among the major offshore sailing events. Organized by the Circolo della Vela Sicilia in collaboration with the Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (gate passage in Porto Cervo).
Gold for YCM
Alexandre Richard, a coach in the Sports Section, and Nicolas Lelu were at the French Handivoile (double-hander regatta) Championship for sailors with a disability. They finished 43rd out of 90 boats in the gold group. The two went straight on to the Hansa National (solo regatta) where Nicolas Lelu was 32nd in the gold group ahead of Alexandre Richard who finished 37th in the gold, and 2nd in the silver.
Sports Section out in force
A dozen young sailors from the Yacht Club de Monaco competed at the Interleague SIL Regatta, divided into the younger Benjamin category and older Minime. Three days of competition saw four and five races completed in Antibes Bay in conditions oscillating between 0 and 7 knots with a swell, putting the skills and resilience of the youngsters to the test. In Minime out of 72 contestants, Victor Holst came 23rd ahead of Louis Faivre 30th, Jules Huon 43rd, Mona Benchekroun 47th, Anastasyia Verpeka 51st, Victor Marquet 59th, Sacha Mousny 61st, Julian Lampert 62nd, Joséphine Dobbelaere 71st and Louis Pompée 72nd. In the Benjamins, out of 103 entrants, Frederik Holst finished 47th while Roman Lampert and Facundo Rubinelli came 76th and 103rd respectively. It was an invaluable experience as it was an opportunity to improve skills in demanding marginal conditions.
Silver fleet for Ehlen
Some 125 contestants from 36 nations and all continents descended on Hyères for this last major event before the discipline makes its debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Among the 79 men from 32 countries and 46 women from 25 countries was Alexander Ehlen from Yacht Club de Monaco who came 2nd in the silver group after finishing in the top ten in 12 of the 16 races.
YCM colours win the day
After a very good 4th in Les Voiles de Cassis a few days ago, Yacht Club de Monaco’s flagship Tuiga and her crew of always enthusiastic members notched up another victory to add to their list of achievements at this latest event. This time it was in the Veteran category that the gaff cutter triumphed after winning two of the three races. In the wake of the 15M IR, Carlo Falcone’s Mariella, also from YCM, clinched a well-deserved 3rd place. In IOR Classic, there was one undisputed victor with three wins out of three for Massimiliano Ferruzi (Il Moro di Venezia), also victorious in the Vela & Sapori ranking.
5th place for Rayon Vert
The 13th Armen Race was held 9-12 May at La Trinité-sur-Mer attracting 152 boats. Among them was Oren Nataf, representing Yacht Club de Monaco on Rayon Vert which came 5th in the Multi 2000 category. This major offshore race is a great opportunity to compete against other amateurs and pros with a choice of two courses. The first is 350 nautical miles involving two nights at sea and really puts sailors to the test, while the shorter La Nuit de l’ArMen Uship is 131 nautical miles in a return trip round Glénan.
Artemis Racing pulls off first win in eight years
Artemis Racing, helmed by Torbjörn Törnqvist from Yacht Club de Monaco proved he is well and truly back in the running as they won five of the nine races completed at the 44Cup Baiona. This second stage on the circuit attracted nine boats. “I am absolutely delighted,” said a beaming Torbjörn Törnqvist. “I think it was the perfect regatta for us. Everything seemed to work well from trimming the boat to crew coordination. Our confidence is increasing as we progress. We have also made some beneficial changes to the team particularly with Hamish Pepper as tactician”. Artemis Racing had not won a regatta since 2016. The crew on Vladimir Prosikhin’s Team Nika also from the YCM came 2nd to retain their position as provisional overall leader of the season. Two-time world champion of the class, Nico Poons (Charisma), finished 7th. The class meets again in a few weeks’ time at the 44Cup Marstrand in Sweden, 19-23 June.
4th place for Tuiga
Les Voiles de Cassis ended after three days of fierce competition for the classic yachts competing in this event which included Yacht Club de Monaco’s flagship Tuiga. After four races, the gaff cutter pulled off a very good 4th place.
Tuiga joins parade
A hundred years after the last Summer Olympics in France and with 79 days to go to the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 games, the Olympic torch landed safely in Marseille aboard Belem. After a journey of 12 days from Athens the three-master arrived in the Phoenician city on Wednesday 8th May.
2nd place for Boris Herrmann
After an extraordinary, very accomplished race and fierce battle to the finish, Boris Herrmann from Yacht Club de Monaco at the helm of Malizia-Seaexplorer finished 2nd in the 15th edition of The Transat CIC, pipped to the post by Yoann Richomme on PAPREC ARKÉA.
