Monaco Optimist Team Race

Faultless domination

10-14 January 2024

Saturday 13th January 2024 – It was an exciting third day under optimal conditions for the Monaco Optimist Team Race. With a lovely 7-10 knot southwesterly blowing, the 72 contestants in the 18 teams fought their tactical strategic duels with tenacity and the unique competitive spirit so characteristic of this format.

Consistency key to success

The round robin phase continued without a hitch allowing teams to meet all their adversaries as planned. Strategies, tactical manoeuvres and team coordination were put to the test creating an electric atmosphere on the water . As they did on the first day, the Turks again stand out and dominate the top of the table this evening. This national team did their country proud showing impressive control over the conditions and race area, thanks to outstanding coordination, to gain the advantage in all their duels and rack up eight wins.

Monegasques in with a chance

The Monegasques took full advantage of their deep understanding of local conditions. With four match race wins in the bag, Yacht Club de Monaco is in a provisional 7th place. “They are really sailing well and it’s all down to a few details,” said their coach Margaux Meslin. “I’m very happy with their attitude, they are working so well as a team”.

At the end of the day it was time for debriefings with each team gathered round their respective coaches to analyse the encounters, mistakes made and tactical moves, a great chance to assess the strategy and for some to change it.

Tomorrow the final phases of the Monaco Optimist Team Race kick off at 10.00am.
