Yacht Racing Image Award
Since its launch in 2010, the Yacht Racing Image Award has been celebrating the art of capturing the beauty and intensity of international regattas. For this 15th edition, regatta sailor and YCM member Michael Kurtz stood out from the 130 photographers from 31 countries in the competition. His exceptional high-action shot of the J Class Velsheda, taken at Saint-Barthélemy, impressed the international jury of sailing and photography experts.
More on the winning photo
Michael Kurtz captured the essence of racing in a shot combining technique, emotion evoked by the image and originality: “I was in the chase boat, going past rocks that were being splashed, with the boats sailing just 100m from the cliffs”.
What makes this shot unique is the impression created by the contrasting colours of deep brown sails and white spray and the quality of light that adds drama to the scene. It showcases the power of the elements, elegance of the boats and unwavering bond between Man and the sea.
Three in one competition
There are three principal prizes:
· The main prize, awarded by an international jury of experts.
· The Public Prize, based on votes made online.
· The Delegates Prize, based on votes by METSTRADE visitors and delegates at the World Sailing Forum.
Michael Kurtz won first prize in the latter category. Of the photographs submitted, 20 images were selected as finalists and were on display in Amsterdam during the METSTRADE show.
