From 26 February to 1st March, Valencia was an epicentre of the Optimist class as 408 contestants from 30 nations converged on the Real Club Náutico de Valencia for the 8th OptiOrange, a highly competitive international regatta. The Optimist competition team lived up to its promise confirming that this new generation belong at this level, as they are learning fast and progressing to keep in contact with the best.
The first qualifying stage set the tone, with around 100 boats on the start, general recalls and a breeze shifting between 8 to 9 knots requiring micro-managed tactics. It was an ideal opportunity for Yacht Club de Monaco’s young sailors to put their skills into practice.
Pietro Carlevaris and Louis Faivre reached the Silver group with their 131st and 196th places, respectively, confirming their consistency in a crowded highly competitive international event. Just outside this group, Joséphine Dobbelaere pulled off some excellent races in Bronze to finish 220th demonstrating once again her ability to compete in the vanguard.
For Jules Huon (338th), Mona Benchekroun (389th) and Sacha Mousny (399th) it was a steep learning curve given the density of the fleet. Starts under pressure, reading the course and managing trajectories amidst hundreds of competitors demanded clear thinking and constant communication. Their progress is evident in their improved start techniques, solid tactics and growing confidence in their strategy choices.
Beyond results, this trip served to strengthen the team’s bonds. Cohesion and solidarity, with the more experienced sharing their knowledge with younger members, the team are united. Both ashore and at sea their exchanges show they are learning together. The next generation is here and developing well regatta after regatta.
