Sunshine and a light breeze accompanied the 19th Vela & Golf, an annual event since 2005 organised by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS). On the greens of the Pevero Golf Club then at sea, Yacht Club de Monaco won the day ahead of their YCCS hosts who were second followed by Yacht Club Punta Ala completing the podium. YCCS led by Germano Scarpa were defending their titles won during the last two editions against five strong teams: Marina Militare skippered by Aurelio De Carolis, Pevero Golf Club by Tommaso B. Carpaneto, Yacht Club Adriaco by Alderico Paganini, Yacht Club Punta Ala by Alessandro Masini and Yacht Club de Monaco led by Roberto Tamburelli.

Pace controlled by Roberto Tamburelli

It all started on 24 May on the Pevero Golf Club golf course and from the start Roberto Tamburelli took the lead followed by Yacht Club Punta Ala and YCCS, both equal on points. The crews then met in Porto Cervo bay for three upwind downwind races in ideal conditions with a 6-8 knot north-north west breeze under sunny skies. At sea the battles were fierce between Yacht Club de Monaco, the YCCS and Yacht Club Adriaco entrants. From the first race they remained as a group to the left of the race area, but it soon ramped up between the Monegasques and the locals, with Monaco nipping in to open up a small gap between them on the final tack to cross the finish first.
A similar scenario played out in the second race, with Yacht Club de Monaco taking the lead followed by YCCS. In the last race, the YCCS crew maintained their lead without being seriously threatened despite a good performance by Adriaco. Both boats were neck and neck at the first leeward gate but YCCS pulled away from the fleet. In the end Adriaco was overtaken by Yacht Club de Monaco that had come back strongly to grab 2nd place. Yacht Club de Monaco emerged the winner overall, golf and regatta results combined, the first time since 2022. YCCS was just two points adrift in 2nd followed by Yacht Club Punta Ala.
Next YCCS event: the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta from Tuesday 27 May.
