IRC and ORC owners meet up on international circuits to harness the power of their boats on renowned waters.
IRC is a measurement system based on an overall assessment of the boat. It takes into account criteria such as hull length, sail area, boat weight and other characteristics, but without going into the technical details of construction. In this way, the IRC ensures equal competition by adjusting the results for different types of yacht. This system is widely used in international regattas, including the famous Rolex Fastnet Race.
ORC, on the other hand, is a more technical and detailed measurement system. It relies on precise measurements of the hull, appendages, sails and other aspects of the boat. ORC uses complex calculations to determine a yacht’s performance potential, taking into account factors such as maximum speed under different conditions. It is often used in offshore regattas, particularly in Europe, and is designed to be more accurate in assessing the boat’s actual performance.
