Palma hosted Round 5 of the Cape 31 circuit, a fast expanding class attracting more and more leading names in international sailing. Eight races were completed in varied conditions, with America’s Cup sailors and Olympic medallists among contestants, confirming the high level on this circuit. The American crew on Pacific Yankee emerged victorious, solid from start to finish, ahead of Stella Maris and Kalantis.
Yacht Club de Monaco was represented by Loïc Pompée and his crew aboard Terrible Joy, for a stage that marked a turning point with renewal of a crew that included talented youngsters from diverse backgrounds. For many it was their first time competing in a regatta of this level, but supported by experienced sailors like Aymeric Arthaud, the group gradually found their feet.
After a cautious start on day one, Terrible Joy pulled off a superb 4th place during day two and a 5th place on the final day, proving their ability to compete with the best. Despite one very difficult race, the team finished 11th overall and won the Corinthian (amateur) category.
It’s not just about results but illustrates how important it is to bring on young sailors by giving them an opportunity to progress on a modern and demanding boat. The crew are now preparing for the upcoming European Championship next month in Palma which is expecting a fleet of 30-plus boats. The Terribly Joy crew’s goal is to finish in the top ten.
