The 2025 season for the Smeralda 888 class concluded this weekend in the Principality with the Trophée Adalberto Miani finals, a stage that was as symbolic as it was fiercely contested. Three races were completed in challenging conditions for the 14 teams competing. After perfect starts and surgical consistency the die was cast that saw Marco Favale’s Millenium Falcone beat the competition to claim the 2025 title. With 17 teams ranked, eight nations represented and an average ten boats per regatta the season confirms the vitality of an international fleet.

Millenium Falcon finishes in style

After three days of competition, this final event was won by Marco Favale (Millenium Falcon) whose precision and consistency are reflected in the weekend’s results, 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Behind him was Vittoria Lombardi Stronati (Be Cool) from YCM who excelled throughout the regatta, and the Italian Germano Scarpa (Giada) in 3rd.

A very competitive season

The win this weekend clinched the 2025 Championship for Millenium Falcon after a close-run season. Vamos mi Amor helmed by Class President Charles de Bourbon des Deux-Siciles from YCM came 2nd followed by Giada in 3rd. Not much separated the contestants throughout the season, with gaps never exceeding a few points in the rankings. Since February the Smeralda 888 fleet has been in action across the Mediterranean, starting in Monaco when Germano Scarpa (Giada) won at the Primo Cup-Trophée UBS. YCM’s Charles de Bourbon des Deux-Siciles (Vamos mi Amor) emerged the winner in Alassio at the Trofeo Luigi Carpaneda, followed by Luigi Guarnaccia (Capocaccia) who triumphed in Saint-Tropez. Then in Porto Cervo, Marco Favale (Millenium Falcon) won the event before Capocaccia confirmed their form in July at the Coppa Europa. Gaps were small and the suspense nail-biting as the finale in the Principality approached.

A moving tribute to Adalberto Miani

On Saturday evening, the teams gathered at the Yacht Club de Monaco to pay tribute to Adalberto Miani, a founder of the class and long-time member of the Club who passed away at the end of 2024. At an event attended by his whole family, a slide show retraced his life as an athlete and competitive sailor with his loved ones taking turns to speak. It was an emotional occasion and a reminder of the lasting impact this man has left on Monaco’s sailing community. The Smeralda 888 fleet has proved yet again that it is a dynamic fleet in the Mediterranean, one where sporting rivalries at sea and camaraderie ashore maintain the balance between elegance and tension. For this first Trophée Adalberto Miani, it was a tribute worthy of a man driven by a passion for sport.

Date set for next season

There is no let-up for Yacht Club de Monaco as it prepares Act 1 of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series (6-9 November). Since 2013, this winter circuit of regattas has given international J/70 teams a chance to prepare for the upcoming season under the best winter race conditions.  For the Smeralda 888 class, their 2026 season kicks off in March at the 42nd Primo Cup-Trophée UBS (5-8 March 2026).
