8th Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series
Sunday 17th January 2021. For the first regatta of the year in Monaco waters, the result was indisputable. After three days of competition, Act 1 of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series was won by Claudia Rossi on Petite Terrible-Adria Ferries, the current J/70 European Champion and her crew outclassing the competition.
Faultless performance
Nothing could cool the ardour of the Italians on Petite Terrible-Adria Ferries in these winter conditions. Led by the excellent Claudia Rossi, the team quite simply dominated the races. It was impossible for their opponents to throw them off course, even when the Italians produced a couple of lack lustre windward legs. They stood on the podium top step having won two of the five races.
Normally a regular in the top three in the Melges 32, YCM member Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio again took his G-Spot to the top of the table to clinch 3rd place. He was just five points behind the Swiss on Jerry who also won the Corinthian (amateur) category ahead of YCM’s Ludovico Fassitelli (Junda) and Cesare Gabasio (TinnJ70).
High level
Of the 21 teams who made the trip, 15 were high level, demonstrating impeccable control of their boat. Starting procedures and mark roundings went without a hitch for all five races, with even the slightest tack calculated and executed to perfection, and no hint of a luff after gybes in the lead pack. All the ingredients were there to ensure a great event on the Monegasque race area.
It was also the first regatta of the year in France, all classes combined. The fleet meet again on 4th February for Act 2 of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series before the grand finale at the 37th Primo Cup-Trophée Credit Suisse (4-7 March 2021).
Final ranking
1st: Claudia Rossi (Petite Terrible-Adria Ferries) – ITA – 9 pts
2nd: Thomas Studer (Jerry) – SUI – 11 pts
3rd: Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio (G-Spot) – MON – 16 pts
