Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series – Act II
The J/70 fleet is set to conclude 2024 in style with Act II of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series of monthly regattas organised by Yacht Club de Monaco, now in its 12th edition. Thirty-one J/70 teams representing eight nationalities have three days of tough competition ahead of them. Also racing alongside them are the Cape 31 and ClubSwan 28 boats.
Early trends
This second stage promises to be competitive with a fierce battle for leadership in the offing. All eyes are naturally on Stefano Roberti (Piccinina) who triumphed in Act I in November, but the competition is far from having had its final word. Among serious contenders for the Championship title are Pierrik Devic’s Raph Seven Yacht, looking to repeat and even exceed their performance last month of a hard-earned 2nd place. Behind them, teams like Graeme Peterson’s Moonlight and Matteo Scandolera’s Irruenza could shake up the Monegasque hierarchy.
A European confrontation
While the Monegasques are in a strong position, international contenders are set to give them a run for their money. With teams from Switzerland, Hungary, Ireland, France, Germany and Italy this second stage has the air of being a European championship. For foreign teams it is an opportunity to prove they are getting to grips with a race area that is known to be technically demanding. Among them, some names could well surprise the Rocher regulars.
