World Cup ambitions
Trofeo Princesa Sofia
29th March – 6th April
Traditionally the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca kick starts the season. But this being Olympic year several classes had already taken advantage of the early months of 2024 to get their World and European Championships in. Yet it was this Spanish meeting where ten Olympic classes turned out to race on one race area for a dress rehearsal before the summer’s big event.
More than 1,100 sailors representing 75 nationalities went head to head in the beautiful bay of Palma in Mallorca for this first World Cup Series 2024. For some the 53rd Trofeo Princesa Sofia was an opportunity to work on speed and tactics and test out new gear.
Monegasque Alexander Ehlen, competing in the Kitefoil category, started the event in style and climbed to 12th place having been in the top ten in xx of the xx races completed. In ILCA 7, Jérémy Moutout, also from Yacht Club de Monaco, avoided the pitfalls on the Spanish race area to finish a worthy 118th place.
The two YCM athletes now have their sights set on potential Olympic selection at the French Olympic Week in Hyères 20-27 April. Many consider it to be a last chance saloon to reach that Holy Grail of being able to line up on the start of the Paris Olympics in Marseille.
