Smeralda 888 International Championship finale – 20-22 October 2023
Eighth win in the bag!
Sunday 22nd October 2023. The 2023 season has just ended for this Gentlemen racing fleet. Under its President Charles de Bourbon des Deux-Siciles the Smeralda 888 class has gone from strength to strength to become a must on the calendar. Saint-Tropez, Alassio, Porto Cervo, Calvi, Monaco and now Barcelona comprise the Mediterranean circuit. This year saw 17 teams in competition, a record that shows the class really has the wind in its sails.
Unbeatable
There are always many contenders in the race for first place in the Smeralda 888 International Championship. Some manage to occupy top stops more than others like the men on Vamos mi Amor helmed by Charles de Bourbon des Deux-Siciles. A 4th place in the finale in Monaco this weekend was enough for this gentleman to win the 2023 season, adding to an extraordinary record as it is his eighth championship title of his Smeralda 888 career.
A family challenge
For the Onorato clan, sailing is a family affair. With performance as his legacy, Achille (the son) announced a few months ago that he wanted to beat his dad in the Championship. These two redoubtable sailors combined talent and finesse throughout the season keeping the suspense going down to the wire. A recognised name in the sport, Achille Onorato (Canard à l’Orange) emerged victorious over his illustrious father Vincenzo (Mascalzone Latino) and was 2nd in the final rankings 2023.
The final race of the season, held in Monaco, finally crowned Timofey Sukhotin (Beda), who had already won the annual title in 2016 and 2020.
Keeping up the pace
There’s no let up at Yacht Club de Monaco with the Grimaldi Trophy race between San Remo and Monaco set to start next week, followed a few weeks later by Act 1 of the 11th Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series for the J/70s. This monthly programme of regattas draws many of the best teams from all over Europe making the most of the mild winter conditions to prepare for the upcoming season.
