Vladimir Prosikhin the new World Champion

44Cup World Championship – Brunnen

21-25 August 2024
The RC44 World Championship ended on Sunday on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland after a fierce battle between Vladimir Prosikhin’s Team Nika from Yacht Club de Monaco and Igor Lah’s Ceeref Vaider who finally conceded victory after four days of racing. “It was one of the happiest events of my life as to be honest it was so difficult,” said Vladimir Prosikhin after he was pushed into the water as is tradition for the winners. “It’s a really tough class as everyone is on the same high level – almost any boat could win the Worlds which is why it’s so rare”.
In the end, seven races were completed in this always highly anticipated RC44 event. Right up to the last day it was difficult to predict the results. In widely varying conditions, the first day saw Torbjörn Törnqvist’s team on Artemis Racing claim their second win of the meeting where he finished in 8th place. Meanwhile, World Champion title holder Nico Poons (Charisma) despite only winning one race during this Championship was very consistent to clinch 5th place in the final overall ranking. Worth noting that eight of the nine RC44s won at least one race, an example of just how competitive this one design class is where each boat is helmed by its owner.
The 44Cup 2024 concludes at Nanny Cay in the Virgin Islands 21-24 November.
