After the success of virtual regattas for members during lock-down and the eSail Evening every Wednesday for Happy Hour, the Sports Section came up trumps again, this time for the Flotte des Commissaires. It was a chance to swap roles and give this committed group of volunteers who run all the Club’s regattas a chance to race – albeit not on the water.
For this occasion, the Jean Lorenzi Cup became the e-Lorenzi Challenge for 14 of the Flotte des Commissaires volunteers to battle it out. There was one warm-up race followed by four races each about 8-10 minutes long during a fun and competitive evening.
Some had coaching from members of the Sports Section, others winged it solo, but all enjoyed virtual sailing, a first for some and new passion for others.
The evening saw two winners crowned: e-sailing novice Murielle Plut won the evening’s regatta under instruction, but wanted to share it with Richard Couldrey who was sailing solo and has competed in all the e-Sailing contests organised by the YCM since March. A well-deserved trophy that will be put back into play for the next Jean Lorenzi Cup – hopefully on the water!
