The next generation at YCM confirmed their potential at the Southern League Finale. Held on Lake Serre-Ponçon, this final stage on the regional circuit was a chance for the young Monegasque sailors to see how they measure up against the Optimist and ILCA elite in the Southern League. Several podium finishes, four selections already secured for the French Championships and consistent results across both classes confirms that the work put in by YCM’s Sports Section is paying off.

In the Optimist Minime (older) category, Pietro Carlevaris pulled off a solid 4th place in the boys while Joséphine Dobbelaere was on the podium for the girls in an excellent 3rd place. Louis Faivre came 19th, Jules Huon 35th and Sacha Mousny 47th in a fleet of 53 particularly competitive entrants.

In ILCA 4, the young Monaco sailors also did themselves proud. Mark Slotboom secured 3rd place in the overall ranking, 2nd in the boys and topped the Southern Region rankings.

Giorgios Papavasileiou came in 4th place overall and 3rd in the boys. Gabriel Lanteri Gaglio ranked 11th and Antoine Sauval 17th. Ennio Rostagni completed the Monegasque delegation in 25th place.

National selections already confirmed

Beyond the results, this League finale was an important step in the lead up to the French Championships. Mark Slotboom, Giorgios Papavasileiou and Gabriel Lanteri Gaglio have all secured their selection in ILCA 4. Gabriel Superina, absent from this finale due to school commitments, has also qualified in ILCA 7.

In ILCA 6, Roman Lampert finished 11th in the overall ranking and 7th in the boys category, confirming that he too is making good progress within the regional fleet.

A race venue that rewards the best all-rounders

Located between Embrun and Savines-le-Lac, Serre-Ponçon is one of the most technical race venues on the regional calendar.

Daily thermal breezes often result in steady conditions, but the surrounding terrain also generates many local variations requiring sailors to constantly monitor wind shifts and remain focused.

Yacht Club de Monaco’s young sailor demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt during the starts and in their tactical choices on what can be a tricky race area.

On course for the French Championships

These results achieved at Serre-Ponçon underpin the emergence of a promising generation at the YCM. The next stage is a national regatta at Maubuisson before the season’s main objective, the French Championships.

YCM’s next generation confirmed their potential at the Southern League Finale with several sailors regularly in the vanguard and already qualified for the big national challenge ahead.
