G-Spot secured a podium finish in Act III of the J/70 Italian Cup following a fiercely contested regatta on Lake Garda. Having led the Italian circuit’s third stage for much of the event, Matteo Marenghi Vaselli and his crew finished in 2nd place after eight races. The Monegasque team missed out on the win by just one point to the German crew on Paint It Black. Meanwhile, Charisma H992 Sailing Team, owned by Nico Poons and helmed by Carlo Vroon, finished in 20th place.

G-Spot secures podium finish in Act III of the J/70 Italian Cup

Circolo Vela Torbole hosted this third stage of the season just days before the European Championship in Barcelona. More than 30 crews travelled to Lake Garda, proof once again of the momentum driving growth of the J/70 class in Italy.

Conditions lived up to the venue’s reputation. Lake Garda’s signature thermal wind, the Ora, blew steadily throughout the three days of racing, allowing the Race Committee to complete all eight races scheduled.

In this one design class, where all the boats have equal potential, the rankings are determined by starts, manoeuvres, and of course tactical choices. Gaps at the top remained extremely tight throughout the regatta, with several crews vying for top spot right up to the final races.

Matteo Marenghi Vaselli tantalisingly close to victory

After a solidly consistent first day, G-Spot stepped up a gear during the second stage of the competition. With two consecutive wins under their belts, Matteo Marenghi Vaselli moved to the top of the overall ranking to win the Garmin Cup, awarded for the best performance of the day.

The crew therefore went into the final day as favourites. But a difficult start in the penultimate race, when G-Spot found itself boxed in near the committee boat, reshuffled the order. Despite a strong recovery and a final race that went down to the wire, the Monegasque boat finished 2nd, just one point adrift of the leader.

G-Spot secured a podium finish in this third stage of the J/70 Italian Cup after leading the regatta from start to finish. His 2nd place confirms Matteo Marenghi Vaselli’s consistency as one of the best helmsmen on the Italian circuit which means he left Torbole with one of his best results of the season.

Another Yacht Club de Monaco representative, Charisma H992 Sailing Team, owned by Nico Poons and skippered by Carlo Vroon, finished in 20th place. In a particularly competitive fleet, Act III once again confirms the very high level of competition in the J/70 Italian Cup.

The J/70 fleet meets again in Italy 2-4 October for the national championship in Porto Cervo.
