RYA YOUTH SAILING STAGES

Sailing courses designed to build skills and confidence

The sports section, RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Training Centre, offers a wide range of theoretical and practical courses, internationally recognized, allowing participants to acquire the necessary skills to sail safely and progress from beginner to advanced level.

Useful information:

  • Certification courses for sailing technical levels: develop nautical skills while officially validating your level according to the RYA program. Instruction will be delivered using technical terminology in both English and French in order to reflect international sailing practice as closely as possible.

  • Courses are intended for children enrolled in the Yacht Club de Monaco Sailing School, for children of Yacht Club de Monaco members, and for Monégasque children, from the age of 6.

    Courses are intended for children enrolled in the Yacht Club de Monaco Sailing School, for children of Yacht Club de Monaco members, as well as for children living in Monaco and surrounding municipalities, subject to available places, from the age of 6.

  • Training camps are organized during the Monaco autumn and spring school holidays, in morning sessions (9:00 am – 12:00 pm) or afternoon sessions (1:30 pm – 4:00 pm) depending on the level.

 

Stages Programme

RYA Stage 1 – Introduction & Discovery

During this course, you will learn the basics of sailing, the different parts of the boat, as well as launching, recovery, and steering techniques. By the end of Stage 1, you will understand the fundamental principles of sailing, enabling you to move on to Stage 2. No prior sailing knowledge or experience is required to take part in this course.

RYA Stage 2 – Manoeuvres & Fundamental Techniques

During this course, you will continue to develop your basic sailing skills, as well as seamanship techniques and collision-avoidance rules. You will learn how to perform a tack and control the boat’s speed, enabling you to progress to Stage 3 in good conditions.

RYA Stage 3 – Confidence & Independent Sailing

During this course, you will further develop rigging and sailing techniques, learn capsize recovery procedures, and strengthen your theoretical understanding of sailing, while continuing to improve your launching and recovery skills. By the end of the course, you will be able to launch and sail a dinghy independently around a triangular course in moderate conditions.

RYA Stage 4 – Double-Handed Sailing & Advanced Skills

Learn how to apply the skills acquired up to and including Stage 3, while developing a variety of new and exciting skills on the water.
