Demanding variable conditions reigned in Marseille for the 59th Semaine Nautique Internationale de Méditerranée (SNIM). Among big names competing this week was Terrible Joy (MON 2211), the Cape 31 of Yacht Club de Monaco member Loïc Pompée. Despite being at the helm of the smallest boat in the IRC 2 category, he achieved a superb 3rd place, winning five of the seven races completed. He had an excellent crew comprising Pierre Quiroga (winner of the Solitaire du Figaro 2021), Aymeric Arthaux and Adrien de Belloy. The regatta was a key stage in preparations for the 2025 season to fine tune the boat’s settings and accumulate more hours of sailing for Loïc Pompée.

A flying start

The SNIM kicked off on the Friday 18 April with an offshore race when Terrible Joy due to a course error (an amendment not taken into account) inadvertently completed the long 68nm circuit reserved for the IRC 0 and 1 fleets. An unexpected challenge that was met with aplomb. On the Saturday, a strong easterly kept the whole fleet in dock, with racing resuming on the Sunday in brisk but unstable conditions. Four windward-leeward races were held and a coastal race. Terrible Joy lived up to expectations winning three of the races and coming first in the coastal race by 15 minutes. On the Monday, in a typical not so strong Marseille Mistral the crew repeated the feat with two more wins. “The end results were very positive. This SNIM was a very testing regatta and gave us a real confidence boost,” said Loïc Pompée. “The key as always is consistency, precision in the manoeuvres and team cohesion”.

Next stop: the Cape 31 Mediterranean Championship
