J/70 World Championship | 14-22 October 2022
Friday 21st October 2022. Shortly after the skippers briefing, excitement mounted on Quai Louis II in front of the Yacht Club de Monaco’s building. For while sailors were going about their business, a special guest arrived to greet competitors of the J/70 World Championship, the first organised by Yacht Club de Monaco. YCM President HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco was very keen to come and greet all those involved.
Celebrating commitment
Wearing the Worlds colours, the Sovereign started his visit by greeting members of the jury and the many volunteers who ensure the level of excellence at the event. There were photos and handshakes all round with a special greeting for Jean Lorenzi, oldest member in the Club’s Flotte des Commissaires.
A Prince among stars
The Prince continued his visit among the many Olympic medallists and other big names in sailing. Torben Grael (five Olympic medals in Star), Anne-Marie Rindom, (bronze in Rio then gold in Tokyo in ILCA 6), Pietro Sibello (from the 49er circuit, mainsail trimmer on the Italian Challenger Luna Rossa, now coach and consultant for Alinghi), Tanja Frank (bronze medal in Rio in Nacra 17) and Tommaso Chieffi, SLAM ambassador (with many world champion titles to his name and America’s Cup campaigns) made up among others the welcome committee to discuss sailing with the Sovereign.
The YCM President went on to greet the Monegasque sailors individually, starting with Pierre Casiraghi, YCM Vice-President at the helm of one the boats in the Worlds.
Tomorrow, competitors meet at 9.30am on the water for the first warning signal.
