Wiki’s Centennial Expedition has set sail from Monaco on a three-year expedition to link knowledge, territories and generations. Today the classic yacht WIKI (1920) cast off from the quay, officially launching Wiki’s Centennial Expedition led by her owner, the filmmaker and YCM member Tom Woods. More than a departure, today marks the start of a long-term project filled with encounters, exchanges and empowering people through education to help protect and preserve the Mediterranean.

Wiki’s Centennial Expedition sets sail from Monaco on a three-year project in the Mediterranean

Behind this departure lies a clearly defined structure and ambition. For three years, WIKI will cover more than 40,000 km around the Mediterranean. On board are a team of sailors, scientists, filmmakers and young reporters with an overriding objective: to go into the field to observe, understand and document what they see and to share that knowledge. There is a plan of action for the expedition at every port of call, between meetings with local people, educational activities and production of scientific content and documentaries. The battle to control the lion fish invasion, long-term management of plastic waste and preservation of marine ecosystems are just some of the issues addressed during the expedition, with a particular focus on endangered species including cetaceans.

A project based on making connections

The simple yet demanding premise behind the expedition is to build connections. In every region visited, teams will be meeting local stakeholders, institutions and the public, a form of fieldwork designed not only to promote their natural and cultural heritage but also highlight initiatives related to environmental issues. To this end, Wiki’s Centennial Expedition leaves Monaco with a roadmap to connect knowledge and experiences to the reality.

Young people fully involved in the project

Young people and children are at the heart of the project. They are not just invited to follow its progress, but to actively participate  Tens of thousands of pupils and students will be involved along the route in the planned educational programmes, workshops and experiences on board. Learning by experience is the primary aim to get people involved in the environmental stewardship of the Mediterranean.

A collective drive to inspire stewardship of the Mediterranean

The project is part of a broader network of committed stakeholders. Several organisations under the Wiki’s Centennial Expedition’s Help Save The Med banner are contributing to the expedition’s content and deployment. Organisations like Elafonisos Eco, Blue Alliance Monaco, Events for Heritage, SITE Global and Green Armada are providing their expertise for the scientific, environmental and logistical aspects. Launch partner, the Yacht Club de Monaco, is supporting this initiative which takes classic sailing into a whole new realm to protect the Med.

First ports of call in the Mediterranean

WIKI is now underway and after a first port of call in Nice will head for Port-Cros in Corsica then Italy. This itinerary marks the start of a much broader-in-scope journey where every leg enriches the project.
