Yacht Club de Monaco’s ILCA youth sailors made a big impression at the French Youth Championship in Martigues. Competing in the ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 classes, the Sports Section’s team pulled off a remarkable frontal attack as a group. In the boys’ ILCA 4 fleet, Mark Slotboom finished 5th, Giorgos Papavasileiou 6th and Gabriel Lanteri Gaglio 10th. Antoine Sauval completed the team’s performance with a 19th place finish. Out of 65 competitors over ten races, YCM was the only club to have three in the top 10 and four in the top 20.
With three Monegasque boats finishing in the top 10 and four in the top 20, the strength of the team surpassed individual results to stand out during this week of racing in Martigues.
Mark Slotboom led the way, finishing 5th with a score of 68 points. After a challenging start, the young sailor quickly climbed the rankings when he pulled off three 4th place finishes and one 3rd place. Hot on his heels, Giorgos Papavasileiou took 6th place with 73 points, his championship having got off to a strong start with two 5th places then a 2nd in the first three races.
Gabriel Lanteri Gaglio finished 10th while Antoine Sauval came in 19th. Four different style sailors and approaches but a collective result that meant Yacht Club de Monaco stood out among the 65 ILCA 4 entries.
The Sports Section was also represented in the ILCA 6 class by Roman Lampert. Competing against a fleet of 56 contestants the YCM youth sailor finished 31st after 12 races. It was a different category and pace in another crowded fleet where gaps widened with every race.
In Martigues Yacht Club de Monaco’s ILCA youth sailors made a big impression. But above all they showed an ability to get several sailors into the lead pack at one national event – Mark Slotboom and Giorgos Papavasileiou even finished neck and neck, taking 5th and 6th place.
For the Sports Section this French Youth Championship is reward for collective effort as the stats show for the week: out of 65 boys competing in ILCA 4, four YCM sailors from Monaco finished in the top 19, with three making it into the top ten.
