Thursday 28 May 2026. Lord Laidlaw secured a podium finish at the end of the Tre Golfi Multihull Trophy. Competing on Highland Fling XVIII as part of the Tre Golfi Sailing Week, the Yacht Club de Monaco member finished 2nd in this edition which was part of the Italian event’s programme. A performance achieved on a tactically challenging race area shared this week with participants in the IMA Maxi European Championship.
Held alongside the Maxi European Championship, the Tre Golfi Multihull Trophy gathered a fleet of multihulls to the waters off Naples and Sorrento. The programme comprised a mix of coastal and technical inshore races. Like the Maxis, the multihulls had to contend with often light and unstable conditions.
After a first race not counted, Highland Fling XVIII quickly found its rhythm with the crew pulling off a victory, then a 3rd place then another victory in the last race. Such consistency was more than enough to pocket 2nd place overall in a reduced but high-level fleet where every race had an impact on the overall rankings.
Throughout the week, the Gulf of Naples served up a range of varied conditions for the crews. The courses along Sorrento’s coast and approaching Vesuvius presented tricky tactical challenges. Unfazed, Highland Fling XVIII managed to stay at the front, fully exploiting any opportunities granted by this demanding race venue.
Over the years the Tre Golfi Sailing Week has established itself as one of the major events in Mediterranean sailing. Between the ORC World Championship, IMA Maxi European Championship and now the Tre Golfi Multihull Trophy, the event gathers some of the most impressive racing yachts on the international circuit. With Lord Laidlaw’s 2nd place, Yacht Club de Monaco members continue their impressive Italian foray with a stand-out week of several podium finishes and European titles on the waters off Naples and Sorrento.
