Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series – Act I 3-6 November 2022
Sunday 6th November 2022. With eight races in three days, exceptional conditions and impeccable organisation, Act 1 of the 10th Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series of monthly regattas, organised by Yacht Club de Monaco from November to March, served up a dream menu.
Commanding start
The regatta got off to a challenging start on the Friday with a brisk 20-25 knot southwesterly throwing everyone in at the deep end, a day relished by the Monaco teams who bagged the top five places on this first day. Led by YCM’s Graeme Peterson (Moonlight II) in determined style, the rest of the fleet recovered momentum the next day. With winds forecast for the same direction but more moderate, conditions were perfect on the second day. In 10-15 knots and bright sunshine, the race committee made the most of it to launch four races that saw Ludovico Fassitelli (Junda) move into first place, closely followed by Stefano Roberti (Piccinina), both from YCM. Another three races on the final day, Sunday, did not alter the ranking, prolonging the pleasure for the Monegasques.
Fassitelli the shooting star
Winner of the last Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, bronze medal in the European Championship in Corinthian (amateur) category and Worlds Vice-Champion in the One Pro category here in Monaco a few days ago, Fassitelli knows the race area like the back of his hand and never lets up. Seemingly invincible, he emerged winner of the weekend just ahead of local rival Stefano Roberti (Piccinina) from YCM and the Swiss in 3rd on Rhubarbe who also topped the Corinthian ranking.
A busy diverse programme
Keen as ever to pursue its sports policy and maintain its position as a winter training base, next weekend Yacht Club de Monaco hosts its 4th Monaco Optimist & Laser Academy. Nigh on 120 young sailors will rig up in the Principality for this unique event where coaches are allowed to approach their charges during races, the aim being to help them fine tune techniques and tactical skills by giving them invaluable tips on the water.
Then the weekend of 8-11 December 2022 sees the J/70s back out on the water for Act II of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series.
