Monaco Optimist Academy

24-26 November 2023

Over to the new recruits

Friday 24th November 2023. Two weeks after Act 1 of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, young sailors are following in their wake for the 5th Monaco Optimist Academy. The event continues to attract with some one hundred attending this year, proof of Yacht Club de Monaco’s rigorous and proactive policy to passing on a passion for sailing, as befits its collective ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ approach.

Live feedback

What makes the Monaco Optimist Academy special is that it allows coaches to intervene during races, the objective being to fine tune technical and tactical skills and knowledge by giving them invaluable tips on the water. Instructive and undeniably practical, the format means individuals are competing with the largest number of competitors and getting feedback from their coaches at all times.

Ideal leg up

Starting Friday 24th November, the youngsters enjoyed two races in a 7 knot easterly with a flat sea that saw some very close match races.

The fleet includes a delegation of 17 young sailors from YCM’s Sports Section. For some it was their first regatta while for others it marks the resumption of their season. “This first opportunity in a regatta configuration is a great learning experience for the youngest. Everything is new, so it’s a total discovery, yet is on a body of water they know well. It’s a confidence building exercise where they are learning fast and gaining tremendous team spirit,” comments Margaux Meslin, YCM’s Optimist coach.

Reading the race area posed no problem for Lucas Deprez and Roman Vyevyenko who kept the competition at bay in the Minime and Benjamin categories.

Expect some tight contests Saturday 25th November starting 10.30am at this coaching regatta.
