Several podium finishes for Monaco at the Rolex Swan Cup concluded a week of intense racing at the 23rd edition organised by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. A total of 170 boats and over 1,800 sailors turned out to mark the 60th anniversary of the Nautor Swan shipyard. Across the different classes competing in Porto Cervo, several Yacht Club de Monaco members were battling it out for top spots on the podium, securing five 2nd place finishes in the final ranking.
In the ClubSwan 50 class, Leonardo Ferragamo and Cuordileone were in contention throughout the week. A win on the second day followed by two 2nd places the next saw them close in on the winner Earlybird to finish 2nd overall.
The same result for Vargen in the ClubSwan 43 class where Bjorn Rosengren and Jonas Nordlund took 2nd place overall, behind Team 42+1 which won six races in a row.
The outcome was particularly tight in the ClubSwan 28 class. Lorenzo Bortolotti got Black Swan off to a perfect start by winning the only race the class contested on the opening day. They were the provisional leader after three races and remained in contention right to the end, winning the last race. In the end, they were just one small point adrift of Anya Race, the eventual winner in this class.
In Swan Legacy 47, Martin Baum and Elan were also for a long time in contention for victory. Lying first after the opening day, Elan reclaimed the lead on the eve of the finale. In the end, the last race went to Shirlaf. Both boats finished with identical records, two wins and two second places, but it was Elan who came 2nd overall. Vincenzo Onorato completed this series on Mascalzone Latino finishing 2nd in the Legacy 44 class.
The Monaco flag was also represented in the Maxi categories, with Durlindana IV finishing 4th in Mini Maxi and 3rd in Mini Maxi Performance, while Miss 5K completed the podium in Maxi Pure Cruising.
The week’s weather did not play ball every day. On the first day, light winds forced the Race Committee to shorten the programme, resulting in a short coastal race for much of the fleet and just one race for the ClubSwan 28 class.
The scene changed again the next day with a 16 to 26 knot Mistral at the opening of the La Maddalena archipelago course for the different classes. It was still very present on Thursday, with gusts topping out at 25 knots before calming down on the final day to winds of 8 to 12 knots.
The end of this 23rd edition saw several podiums for Monaco at the Rolex Swan Cup to add to results achieved by the YCM fleet in Porto Cervo across very different categories, from Swan Legacy to the ClubSwan One Design series.
