Schindelhauer triumphed at the Ibiza JoySail on WinWin following an edition hampered by the weather that finally gave way to three days of racing around Ibiza and Formentera. A competitive sailor who is a Yacht Club de Monaco member, he won the Performance Cruising 1 category and secured 3rd place in the Performance category.
The fleet had to be patient and remain on the pontoons. On Thursday, storm clouds over the Balearic Islands combined with an orange weather alert issued for Ibiza and Formentera prompted the Race Committee to cancel the first day of racing. Nineteen boats ranging from 80ft to 147ft divided into five categories were all champing at the bit to get out on the water.
It was down to business on the Friday when for the first race teams headed for Formentera on a 21.43 nautical mile course that rounded the island’s southeastern tip. Squalls were still visible on the horizon, but the initial 12-knot breeze picked up to 18 knots, ensuring WinWin got off to a strong start to win their category.
The next day brought a change of scenery. Off Cap des Falcó to the west of Ibiza the fleet set off for Es Vedrà and faced a wider range of tactical choices on both the upwind and downwind legs. WinWin did it again to make it two races and two wins. As they headed into the final day, Kim Schindelhauer and his crew had already established a solid foundation.
In the last race, they clinched 2nd place in Performance Cruising 1. That meant a 1-1-2 scoreline and total of 4 points that put WinWin at the top ahead of Gelliceaux (5 points) and Kalantis (11 points).
In the Performance category, the YCM boat came 3rd equal on points with Gelliceaux on 7 points, behind the winner Moat on 4 points.
Kim Schindelhauer triumphed at the Ibiza JoySail having been among the leaders from the very first race. Two race wins and a 2nd place finish were enough for WinWin to leave Ibiza having won the Performance Cruising 1 category. This member of the Yacht Club de Monaco is no stranger to success, having already won the Superyacht Cup de Palma earlier this summer.
