Viola has excelled at all her stopovers on the United States East Coast. After competing at events hosted by the Manhattan Yacht Club, Larchmont Yacht Club, Indian Harbor Yacht Club and Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, Yacht Club de Monaco member Kostia Belkin and his crew came 3rd today in the Classic B division at Newport’s Race Week.
Since arriving in the United States, Viola has excelled at all her stopovers in America. Helmed by Kostia Belkin from the YCM, the gaff cutter has delivered a string of impressive results. Since early July, Viola has won the friendly regattas organised by the Manhattan Yacht Club, Larchmont Yacht Club and Indian Harbor Yacht Club, and finished 2nd in corrected time, just two seconds behind the winner, at Seawanhaka.
Today, the gaff cutter secured another podium finish at Newport Race Week. “Viola finished third in her class today, with a second-place finish ahead of Spartan,” reported Kostia Belkin, her owner, adding that sailing “in these legendary waters” holds a special significance. Launched in 1998, Newport Race Week held in the historic capital of American sailing is a biennial event organised by the New York Yacht Club.
Having arrived in New York Harbor in late June after several weeks crossing the Atlantic by cargo ship, Viola met up with Yacht Club de Monaco’s flagship Tuiga on site. Both gaff cutters took part in celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the American Declaration of Independence, in their role as spirited ambassadors of Monaco’s maritime heritage. Sailing along the East Coast, they dropped anchor at some of the most spectacular venues in the American sailing world. Viola and her crew of enthusiasts are now heading for Maine to continue their season competing in New England’s classic yacht regattas.
