Championnat de Méditerranée |10-11 October
YCM’s young sailors excelled in the ILCA class at Fos-sur-Mer. The trip to the Bouches-du-Rhône had a dual purpose, as the prize-giving ceremony for the 2025/2026 Mediterranean Championship was followed immediately by the opening event of the new season. Mark Slotboom took 3rd place in the ILCA 4 ranking for the season just ended, while Giorgos Papavasileiou and Gabriel Lanteri Gaglio clinched 2nd and 3rd places respectively at the weekend’s ILCA 4 event. In his debut regatta in the ILCA 6 class, Mark Slotboom finished 4th.
After six races in windy conditions, and already there were two Monaco sailors on the podium. In this first stage of the 2026/2027 Mediterranean Championship, contestants had to deal with demanding 15-25 knot conditions which did not stop Giorgos Papavasileiou from taking a lead.
In ILCA 4 he finished 2nd out of 31 entrants. His consistency paid off as he came 2nd in each of the first two races and went on to repeat that feat in the final race. A UFD in the third race, deducted from his total score, did not prevent him finishing with 14 points.
Hot on his heels, Gabriel Lanteri Gaglio clinched 3rd place, which for this YCM sailor in Fos-sur-Mer was his first podium finish in the series and included him winning the third race. He’d already had a strong start with 3rd place in the opening race which he repeated in the fourth race. With two Monaco sailors in the top three, it is hard to imagine a better start to the season.
For Mark Slotboom, the weekend was the start of his ILCA 6 adventure. Following his season in ILCA 4, this highly competitive sailor in the Sports Section was competing in his first ILCA 6 regatta at Fos-sur-Mer.
He was straight out of the blocks for the first race with a 4th place out of 36 contestants. His other results (4th, 7th, 5th, 4th and 7th) kept him within striking distance of the top three in his first encounter in this category.
There were other YCM representatives at Fos-sur-Mer: Océane Schroeder came 17th overall and 5th in the girls in ILCA 4, while Antoine Sauval and Ennio Rostagni finished 20th and 25th place respectively in ILCA 6.
Fos-sur-Mer was also the official conclusion of the 2025/2026 Mediterranean Championship with the prize-giving ceremony. Mark Slotboom was on the third step of the podium in ILCA 4, having competed in five of the seven events on the calendar. His transition to ILCA 6 could not have got off to a better start.
Between a switch in category, Gabriel Lanteri Gaglio’s first podium finish and Giorgos Papavasileiou’s 2nd place, YCM’s young sailors excelled in ILCA at Fos-sur-Mer, heading home with three podiums to celebrate as one season ends and another begins.
