Maxi European Championship – Sorrento | 14-21 May 2022

Saturday 21st May 2022. With races round the Gulf of Naples and Capri, the European Championship gave competitors a comprehensive programme with a mix of inshore races and one at night. Organised by Circolo Remo e Vela Italia and the International Maxi Association, under the aegis of the FIV and cooperation of Yacht Club Italiano and Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia, the meeting attracted big names in sailing.

It started with the famous 150nm Regata dei Tre Golfi offshore race taking boats north-west of Naples around Ponza Island. The fleet then had the choice of leaving Capri to port or starboard before rounding Li Galli Islands to Capri and the finish. Another four days of racing followed with inshore courses between Capri and Sorrento.

In the all-classes combined ranking, IMA President and YCM member Benoit de Froidmont came in a well-deserved 4th aboard Wallyno, which also won in its class. A special mention too for YCM member Lord Laidlaw (Highland Fling XI) who finished 2nd in Class 1, his Reichel Pugh 82 Maxi coming 6th in the all-classes combined ranking.

Maxis in the Principality

The first Porto Cervo-Monaco IMA 24h Challenge (10-12 September 2022) launches this year. It’s a brand new event for those bringing back their boats to the European mainland at the end of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. The format is simple but unique with the start from Porto Cervo at 11.00am on Sunday 11th September (day after the end of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup). The fleet then has 24 hours to cover the 200 nautical miles separating Porto Cervo from Monaco. For boats that go over this time limit, their ranking will be calculated based on the distance remaining to the finish. IRC compensated times will be applied to determine the overall winner.
