J/70 Cup 2023 – Lerici – 20-22 October
Sunday 22nd October 2023. The final stage of the Italian J/70 Championship was held in Lerici, Liguria, with five races completed by a thirty-strong fleet. Before the last start of the season, the Italian Championship was more open than ever and only determined on the last race. After a close race of complicated tactical choices down to the last gybe, Sofia Giondi on Wanderlust emerged the winner just ahead of Yacht Club de Monaco’s Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio (G-Spot) who finished 2nd while Matteo Scandolera (Irruenza) came 16th. The race for the Alphazer Trophy Energystart was won by Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio (G-Spot) who also came 4th in the Garmin Cup ahead of Matteo Scandolera (Irruenza) 25th, who also came 8th in the Corinthian category.
At the end of four regattas totalling 27 races this year, the 2023 season ended on a high for the 76 teams in competition including those from Yacht Club de Monaco. Stefano Roberti (Piccinina) came 15th just ahead of Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio (G-Spot) 16th and Cesare Gabasio (Tinn J70) 21st. The 2022 World Vice-Champion Pierrik Devic and his crew on Leonteq were 36th with Louis Poons (Charisma V) and Matteo Scandolera (Irruenza) ranked 48th and 58th respectively. A short break now for the Monegasques before Act 1 on 9th November of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, a series of monthly regattas launched in 2013 so that international teams can compete throughout the winter.
