The Italian Team’s time is 7 hours, 50 minutes and 44 seconds

 

Perseverance pays off! After a first attempt last weekend on the evening of 13-14 March in difficult conditions that damaged the rudder a few miles after the start, forcing them to abandon the attempt, Giovanni Soldini and his crew were back in Monaco bay this morning.

 

After leaving Monaco at 01:18 in the morning, the trimaran took full advantage of a stiff north-easterly to set course for Corsica: “At first we were sailing really fast in a 25/30 knot north-easterly, reaching speeds up to 38 knots, then the wind dropped before the Strait of Bonifacio for a couple of hours. Luckily, the wind picked up again and we started to speed up in the Strait.”

Crossing the line on 21st March at 09:09, the Multi 70 Maserati beat the Wally Record for multihulls in a time of 7 hours 50 minutes 44 seconds, after 195 miles at an average speed of 24.71 knots. The time shaves 2 minutes 47 seconds off the previous record held since 2016 by another Multi 70 Phaedo3, skippered by British sailor Brian Thompson.

Instigated by Wally (Ferretti group), in collaboration with Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the record is waiting ratification by the World Sailing Speed Racing Council. “It’s been really incredible, we crossed the finish line sailing at 35 knots! We knew this would be a risky window because of the light wind near Corsica, but we wanted to try anyway and we did our best, pushing Maserati Multi 70 to the maximum, and we did it. We’re all very happy and exhausted!”

 

The Multi 70 Maserati went back in the water at the end of February, after almost four months in the shipyard. The Italian team will set sail for England in the next few days looking for more records to beat.
