Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series – Act II
8-10 December 2023
Friday 8th December 2023. The weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of the 25 teams in competition for Act II of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series of monthly regattas that sees international J/70 crews competing on a technically difficult race area as they prepare for the upcoming season. A north-easterly nudging 20 knots at times spiced up this first day which according to the sailors required oilskins.
Tight at the top
Three races were enough to produce an early Christmas present for the Swiss on Découverte-Geomod judging by their results. With two 2nd places and a win in the bag, the Swiss formation dominated the day with their consistency.
Not far behind are the Monegasques on Leonteq led by the 2022 J/70 World Vice-Champion Pierrik Devic. Completing the provisional podium is the talented Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio and his crew on G-Spot. Having won Act 1, this Yacht Club de Monaco member no doubt has more to say and will probably impose a new tempo on his home ground tomorrow. The top three are separated by only four points, proof of how competitive this J/70 fleet is.
Corinthians: hat-trick for Monaco
In the Corinthian (amateur) category, YCM members monopolise the provisional podium this evening. Locals dominate the fleet’s ranking led by the diligent Cesare Gabasio (TinnJ70) with Matteo Scandolera (Irruenza) and Leandro Casali alongside Adrian Budde (Zero) in 2nd and 3rd.
Rendezvous tomorrow Saturday from 11.00am for day two of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, Act II.
