Palermo-Montecarlo – 21 – 26 August 2021
The circolo della vela sicilia, winner of the prada cup with the Lunda Rossa Prada Pirello team, presents the XVI edition of the Palermo-Montecarlo, the famous offshore regatta on Saturday 21th August 2021 with departure from the gulf of mondello.
Even the Palermo-Montecarlo is ready to resume its route, after being forced to stop last August for the reasons we all know well. The famous offshore regatta organized by the Circolo della Vela Sicilia in collaboration with the Yacht Club of Monaco and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, is scheduled for Saturday 21st August, with the classic departure at noon from the Gulf of Mondello, a breathtaking show which in recent years has colored with sails and emotions one of the most beautiful seascape of the whole Mediterranean sea.
Two years ago, in August 2019, 57 boats were on the star line, with a strong foreign presence. The regatta ended with the real-time victory (and the related Giuseppe Tasca d’Almerita Trophy) of Miguel Galuccio’s Maxi Vera from Argentina, a success led by the legendary Dutch skipper Bouwe Bekking and the 2012 London Italian olympic sailor Michele Regolo. It also ended with the conquest of the Angelo Randazzo Trophy for the overall victory in the ORC International group (the largest in the fleet) of Gabriele Bruni’s ICE 52 Primavista Lauria, with onboard sailors such as Sandro Montefusco, Matteo Ivaldi, Andrea Caracci and the Sicilians Giuseppe Leonardi and Mario Noto.

Two prestigious winners for a regatta that have in its palmares legendary boats such as the Maxi Rambler, Steinlager, Amer Sport One and Esimit Europa 2, the Slovenian 100 footer that still holds the record on the racecourse in 47 hours, 46 minutes and 48 seconds.
Also this year, once Mondello will be left behind, the fleet of Maxis, Multihulls, ORC / IRC hulls and vintage boats will make route towards the Strait of Bonifacio, an obligatory passage managed by the staff of the YC Costa Smeralda and then will have to choose whether to leave Corsica on the right or on the left in the route towards the finish line set in front of the Principality of Monaco. A race course of about 500 miles that represents a unique challenge for offshore sailing enthusiasts and that in the past has also put great names in world ocean sailing to the test.
Registrations for the 16th edition of the Palermo-Montecarlo are open, directly on the event website (www.palermo-montecarlo.it) where the Notice of Race is also available for download. The Palermo-Montecarlo will be managed in accordance with the rules established by World Sailing (the international sailing federation) relating to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation.
“It’ been a complex year for everyone, but we hope to be able to resume our normal activities as soon as possible and to be able to give life, in August, to a certainly special and strongly symbolic edition of our Palermo-Montecarlo race”, said Agostino Randazzo, President of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia, winner of the Prada Cup in Auckland alongside Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, Challenge of Record of the 36th America’s Cup.
